The Morgan County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fire at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church at Hulaco.

Chief Deputy Mike Corley said the department received a call to the church at Hulaco Road and Alabama 67 on Saturday morning and found where a fire burned the back of the church.

The blaze was out when church members discovered the damage that morning.

“We have very little information, but there was evidence of foul play,” Corley said.

The department’s fire investigator is still probing the case.

Church member Karen Harper said someone set the fire sometime between Wednesday evening services and Saturday morning. The fire singed the back of the church wall, melting a portion of the vinyl siding.

Harper said the fire did not get inside the church, which has 35 members and is led by the Rev. Jay Clark.
