VA to build cemetery in Montevallo

MONTEVALLO (AP) — The Department of Veterans Affairs has purchased 479 acres next to The American Village in Montevallo for a National Veterans Cemetery.

U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Birmingham, called the $8 million purchase “a major milestone” on the cemetery project.

The cemetery could accept its first burials by fall of 2008. Officials said a three- to five-acre segment will open first. The rest of the cemetery will open in
50-acre phases until 2040, when it is expected to reach its full size.

With the land purchase completed this week, the VA has awarded a contract for field testing and topographic work that will lead to a final design for the cemetery.

The VA anticipates awarding a full design contract this fall, and actual construction is projected to begin in the spring.
