Man in hospital after allegedly fleeing

ATHENS — A man flown to Huntsville Hospital after fleeing police and crashing into two vehicles was in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.

According to a hospital spokeswoman, James V. Allred Jr. is in the surgical intensive care unit.

Athens Police Chief Wayne Harper said Allred, 39, fled authorities when officers went to his Frazier Street home to serve failure-to-appear warrants on previous traffic violations.

Harper said Allred ran red lights on U.S. 31 and crashed into two vehicles, injuring a 69-year-old Tanner woman.

Harper said Allred had internal injuries.

Lt. Floyd Johnson said Allred faces assault and traffic violation charges once the hospital releases him.
