Citizens Police Academy still taking applications

Decatur police are still taking applications for this year's Citizens Police Academy.

Barry Thomas, coordinator for the event, said the program gives citizens an opportunity to see the community as police officers see it and learn why officers do things the way they do.

Applications are due by Aug. 15, and classes will begin Sept. 4.

Classes will be Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. There is no charge.

To apply, go to decaturalabamausa.com, click on the link for the Police Department, then Community Programs, then Citizens Police Academy.

Or go to the Police Department front desk or call 340-7442 or 301-3139.

Graduates of the class have an opportunity to ride along with an on-duty police officer and may also continue their affiliation by becoming members of the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and performing volunteer work for the department.

Members may work in almost any unit.
