Statistics show crime in Alabama dropped last year

MONTGOMERY (AP) — The number of crimes reported in Alabama dropped by 3 percent last year over the previous year despite a rise in robberies and homicides, new statistics show.

The Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center on Friday released its "Crime in Alabama 2006" report, an annual compilation of offense and arrest data reported by law enforcement agencies throughout the state.

"Alabama's number of assaults dropped at an even higher rate of -8.0 percent last year — which is significantly lower than the -0.7 percent drop reported nationally." said ACJIC director Maury Mitchell.
