ATHENS — An elderly couple who came home from shopping were attacked in their home and robbed Saturday night.

The couple lives in the 8000 block of U.S. 72.

Limestone County Sheriff’s Department Chief Investigator Stanley McNatt said as the couple were putting away their groceries, the woman heard a noise on the screened porch.

“A man had cut the screen to get in the porch,” McNatt said. “He grabbed her when she came out. He said he didn’t want to hurt anybody but wanted the money.”

The intruder then shoved the husband, who fell and hit his head on a metal chair.

The intruder grabbed money from the man’s wallet and took the woman’s purse. He took an undisclosed amount of money.

McNatt said the husband went to Athens-Limestone Hospital to get stitches.

The victims described the attacker as a black male who is 6 feet 3 inches to 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighs about 280 pounds.

The attacker had parked his vehicle on the road, and the couple did not see it.

Anyone with information can call the Sheriff’s Department at 232-0111.
