Lawrence chamber proposes land lease

MOULTON — The Lawrence County Commission is considering leasing an acre of land for $1 a year for a proposed tourism and economic development center run by the Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber Executive Director Vicki Morese asked commissioners Monday to lease the property on Alabama 157 between the Department of Human Resources and Stockyard Steakhouse, minutes after they had agreed to use a portion of that land for a farmers’ market.

She said she didn’t realize plans for a market were in place and hoped there would be enough land to house both facilities.

“I think the two would actually compliment each other,” she said.

Morese offered to run the farmers’ market in exchange for a piece of the property, but commissioners agreed agricultural experts would be better suited for the job.

Commissioner Harold LouAllen originally said the county had about seven available acres there, but Harville said it was likely only 2.2 acres because DHR shared that lot with the county.

Commissioners said they would verify how much land is remaining and make a decision at the Sept. 10 meeting.

If approved, the chamber will launch a capital campaign to raise money for the 2,500- square-foot building and hope to start construction in 2011, said Morese.
