Vietnam airman's body returned to family
BIRMINGHAM (AP) — The remains of an Birmingham airman, missing since the Vietnam War, have been returned to his family for burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
The Pentagon said Lt. Col. Alton C. Rockett Jr. of Birmingham and his co-pilot, Captain Daniel L. Carrier, were flying a reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam when their F-4C fighter jet was shot down by enemy ground fire June 2, 1967.
Local villagers reported in 1989 that they found the wreckage. Because of a mixup, it took forensics experts until 2006 to confirm Rockett's identity.
Rockett will be buried with full military honors Monday at Arlington National Cemetery.
