Award for Jones
Al Jones of Decatur gets a hug from daughter Ann Sherrill after he was surprised with an award by the Kiwanis Club of Decatur on Thursday.
The club made a $1,000 donation in his honor, and statewide Kiwanis governor Gerald Waldrop came from Helena to present Jones with the George F. Hixson Fellowship medallion, plaque and pin, named for the first president of Kiwanis International.
Jones joined the Decatur service club in 1954, and at 81 he is an active member, helping with the club's Pancake Day and Reading Is Fundamental project. The Kiwanis International Foundation will use the donation for projects benefiting children around the world.
A major emphasis has been eliminating iodine deficiency disorders, a leading cause of mental retardation in children, and a $1,000 contribution can benefit 20,000 children.
