Newspaper In Education: Recommended reading
Can you solve the ‘Cody, Tip and the Rusty Truck Mystery’?

Can a dog solve a mysterious crime?

You decide after reading “Cody, Tip and the Rusty Truck Mystery.”

The nine-chapter story will appear as a serial in The Decatur Daily Aug. 27-31 and Sept. 4-7. The series will skip Labor Day’s paper.

Melanie Smith, a staff writer and The Daily’s Newspaper In Education coordinator, wrote the story for readers in grades 4-7.

The Daily’s test readers found it appropriate for family reading, too. The parents read the story aloud to their 8-year-old son and called it “a great family time.”

Each chapter concludes with one or more activities using the newspaper, giving teachers and parents ready opportunities to guide real-world learning. The activities build children’s skills in reading, math and writing.

Science is also important to the series. A recurring theme is recycling. The scientific principle of immiscibility shows up in the story line, and readers will learn how it affects them.

Readers can subscribe to get home delivery of each installment of “Cody, Tip and the Rusty Truck Mystery.” Call The Daily’s Circulation Department at 340-2410.

Teachers who want to start or add to NIE orders to receive all of the series may call Smith at 340-2468 by Wednesday.
