Figures to challenge Sessions
MOBILE (AP) — Democratic State Sen. Vivian Davis Figures said Wednesday that she will formally announce her candidacy for the U.S. Senate in 2008 on Saturday.
Figures will challenge U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions, a Mobile Republican who is seeking a third six-year term in next year’s election. No other challengers have announced for the seat.
Figures, a former Mobile City Council member who has served in the state Senate since 1997, said she will make the announcement at 3 p.m. in the auditorium at Mobile Government Plaza.
This will be Figures’ first bid for national office. Her planned announcement was first reported Wednesday by the Press-Register on its Web site.
