Alleged burglar reportedly returns to scene of crime

An alleged burglar was behind bars Tuesday after he reportedly returned to the scene of an 11-week-old crime.

Decatur police arrested John Douglas White, 55, of 1005 Hillside Circle on Tuesday and charged him with second-degree possession of stolen property and six counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument.

According to police reports, White broke into a house on 13th Avenue Northwest on May 31. The homeowner spotted him leaving with items stolen from the house, police said.

When the homeowner confronted White, White dropped the items and ran, police said. Decatur police issued a warrant for White’s arrest, but he eluded them for more than two months.

Police caught up with him Tuesday. He was arrested at the same residence where the original incident occurred.

Since his arrest, investigators have also connected White to six stolen-check crimes totaling nearly $800.

White remained in the Decatur City Jail on Wednesday without bond.
