Lawrence makes arrests on grand jury indictments

MOULTON — Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies this week arrested a Decatur man on a grand jury indictment charging him with murder in the shooting death of a Red Bank man.

Ivan Quintel Metcalf, 24, of 412 Fifth St. S.W., was in County Jail on Wednesday with no bond set, charged in the April 20, 2006, shooting death of Michael Lynn McCoy, 24.

Investigators said illegal drugs may have been involved.

Metcalf was charged with second-degree robbery in 2001. Authorities charged McCoy, who was 24, with possession of a controlled substance in 2000.

McCoy was shot at his residence at 566 Lawrence County 407, went to a neighbor’s home, knocked on the door and died just inside the door. Sheriff’s deputies arrived minutes later and found a truck bearing a Madison County license plate about a quarter-mile from the scene, investigators said.

The truck had been reported stolen from Decatur.

Sheriff’s deputies also made the following arrests on grand jury indictments:

  • Joshua Duncan Abner, 19, of 3270 Lawrence County 59, charged with second-degree arson and third-degree burglary. Abner was released from custody after posting $11,500 bond.

He was arrested in March in connection with a chicken house fire.

  • Lonnie Oneal Bailey, 43, of Hackleburg, charged with second-degree possession of marijuana and possession of prison contraband. Bailey was in custody at Lawrence County Jail with no bond set.

Bailey and his brother, Harold Wayne Bailey, 34, also of Hackleburg, were indicted in 2005 in connection with the murder of a 70-year-old Wren man.

  • Tony Ray Borden, 42, of Lawrence County 7, charged with unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance, possession of anhydrous ammonia and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released from custody per judge’s orders with no bond set.

Borden was arrested in May, when county authorities raided an alleged meth-making operation in his camper near the Landersville community.

  • Kelly Doyle Bryant, 25, of 3909 Lawrence County 17, charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree theft of property and first-degree theft of property. He remained in custody with no bond set.

  • Jerry Lynn Bryant, 30, of 880 Lawrence County 49, charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree theft of property. He remained in custody with no bond set.

  • Phillip Christopher Duncan, 33, of 2308 Lawrence County 327, Moulton, charged with distribution of a controlled substance. Duncan was released from custody after posting $7,000 bond.

A grand jury indictment is a formal accusation of a crime and does not establish guilt.
