Fiddlers set for first weekend in October
ATHENS — It may seem too hot to think about fiddlers finding Athens in the fall, but they’ll be headed this way in only a month.
The 41st annual Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention will be Oct. 5-6 at Athens State University.
The convention attracts more than 15,000 people and more than 200 competing musicians. The event climaxes with the Fiddle Off, which determines who gets the Fiddle King title.
Musical comedian Mike Snider will be this year’s special guest. He will perform Oct. 5 at 4 and 7 p.m.
Snider, a Gleason, Tenn., native, has been on the country music scene since the 1980s. He had spots on TNN’s Nashville Now and a seven-year stint on “Hee Haw.”
There will be 150 arts and crafts booths and food vendors.
Contests begin Friday at 7 p.m. and will resume Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
Tickets are $7 for Friday and $15 for both days. Children 12 and under get in free with a parent.
