Deadline for Red Ribbon March is Wednesday
By Paul Huggins phuggins@decaturdaily.com · 340-2395 There's just seven days left for elementary, middle and high school groups to register for the 16th annual Red Ribbon Youth March. The event is Sept. 29, but the last day to sign up is Wednesday. Stance against drugs The march encourages youths to publicly proclaim their stance against drugs through creativity and teamwork. It awards prizes for banners and performances that express anti-drug messages, as well as for participation. The theme this year is "Look at me: I'm drug free." Participants will meet in the parking lot across from the Morgan County Courthouse to check in at 9:30 a.m., with the march beginning 30 minutes later. Marchers will walk down Lee Street Southeast to Bank Street and conclude at Founders Park. At the park, school groups will present their drug-free messages. Originality and creativity Judges on the route will score groups on their banners, enthusiasm and spirit. Judges at the park will score groups on the originality and creativity of their program. Other groups can choose to march, but not compete for prizes. The winner in each category wins $100, with second place receiving $75 and third $50. Other prizes will go to groups with the most parents, the most teachers and the group that traveled the farthest to attend. Limited transportation grants of $50 can assist groups with the expense of bus transportation. Applications and registration materials are available by calling the Mental Health Association at 353-1160 or emailing suebrantley@mhain mc.net.
