Morgan County United Way opens campaign
Goal for 2007 is $1.8 million

The United Way of Morgan County officially began its 2007 fundraiser Tuesday with 21 percent of its goal donated.

The organization that funds 32 agencies in Morgan County will attempt to raise $1.8 million this year, almost $100,000 more than it raised last year.

The record for United Way of Morgan County is more than $1.9 million in 2004.

The campaign actually began Saturday when Daikin America presented its 11th annual golf tournament.

It raised a record $345,000, which local United Way officials said is the highest single fundraising event for United Way nationwide.

In addition, 3M's corporate office has pledged $40,000, which is $5,000 more than last year.

One major difference to the campaign this year is United Way dropped its early Pacesetter campaign. Pacesetters typically consisted of about 15 to 20 local companies that held employee campaigns in August.

Campaign Chairman Jon Sedlak said Pacesetters gave the overall campaign a benchmark for how the remaining fundraising would go, but the organization decided it was better to let those companies have more time to strengthen internal fundraising efforts.
