Shelby announces billions for North Alabama defense projects

WASHINGTON — A $459.3 billion defense spending bill that gained Defense Appropriations Subcommittee approval includes important funding for North Alabama, U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa, said Tuesday.

Shelby, a member of the subcommittee, said the bill contains $2.3 billion for Ground-based Midcourse Defense program managed by Redstone Arsenal. It includes more than $1 billion for the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle, a space launch vehicle built at United Launch Alliance's Decatur facility.

It includes $230.5 million for the Light Utility Helicopter, which will replace the Huey, and $242.3 million for the Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter, which will replace the Kiowa Warrior. Redstone Arsenal manages both. The bill also provides $208 million to buy 108 Patriot Advanced Capability missiles.
