Athens man charged with making terrorist threat to police

ATHENS — A man allegedly threatened to burn the Athens Police Department on Monday and hire someone to shoot his arresting police officer.

Athens police Capt. Marty Bruce said the department received a complaint that a man was holding a sign, asking for money at Wal-Mart. Officer Perry Gooch found the man on U.S. 31 and arrested him for public intoxication.

Bruce said during his booking Brandon Elliot Carnes, 26, allegedly told Gooch, "I'll burn your Police Department down. I know people, and I will have them shoot you."

Police list Carnes as living at the Budget Inn while the Limestone County Sheriff's Department lists him as homeless.

Gooch added a charge of making a terrorist threat to Carnes' public intoxication charge. Carnes is in Limestone County Jail. Bond is $25,300.
