Suspicious man seen by playground

A man with binoculars was allegedly seen watching children on a playground, Decatur police said Thursday.

A passerby called police about the man, who was apparently hanging out in an alley near the 400 block of 11th Street Southeast at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to Lt. Frank DeButy, a police spokesman.

Police searched the area but didnít find the man, who was described as appearing in his early 20s and wearing a green shirt, DeButy said.

DeButy said the manís behavior did seem suspicious, but he also noted that his activities could have been something other than what they appeared.

Man charged with stealing phone

Decatur police arrested a man on charges he allegedly stole a phone from a cell phone store on Wednesday.

Jeremy Galen Cox, 29, of 1406 First Ave. S.W. shoplifted the phone from the T-Mobile store at 1000 Beltline Road, Suite C, said Detectives Jim Buchli and Bret Rusnak.

Members of the Anti-Crime unit detained Cox at the store, the investigators said.

Facing a charge of second-degree theft, Cox remained in Morgan County Jail on Thursday in lieu of $750 bond.

Woman injured in Nucor accident

A woman suffered injuries when a steel coil apparently fell on her leg at Nucor on Wednesday night, Decatur firefighters said.

Little information was available about the 10:30 p.m. accident, after which a MedFlight helicopter took the woman to Huntsville Hospital.

Her name and condition were unavailable.
