Mobile County chooses superintendent

MOBILE (AP) — University of West Georgia professor Roy Nichols has been chosen as superintendent of Mobile County schools, the state’s largest system with some 65,000 students.

Nichols, 63, was chosen by the school board Friday over Talladega County schools superintendent Cindy Elsberry.

On Jan. 1, Nichols will replace Harold Dodge, whose contract expires Dec. 31. Nichols has 41 years of experience in education, including superintendent stints in Marietta, Ga.; Norfolk, Va.; and Troup County, Ga.

“Many superintendents see larger systems as the larger the better, and this will be the largest system I’ve ever worked for,” Nichols said. “I do view this as a pinnacle.”

Board members hope to negotiate a contract with the new superintendent by Oct. 1. They have discussed a salary range of between $195,000 and $245,000. Dodge’s salary is $158,800.
