Athens State hosting lecture series on Latino immigration

ATHENS — Athens State University is hosting a lecture series on Latino immigration struggles.

The Thursday event is part of its Livingston Concert Lecture Series.

Stephanie Bohon, associate professor of sociology at the University of Tennessee, will be the guest speaker.

Bohon’s noon topic will be “You Can’t Get There from Here: Transportation and Immigrant Adjustment in the Deep South.” That will be in the Sandridge Student Center ballroom.

Bohon will discuss how Latinos in the Southeast are less likely than whites to drive alone to and from work because they do not have personal cars, which impedes their ability to adjust to their new environment.

She will present “Making Sense of the Dixie Diaspora: Latino Migration in the New South” at 7 p.m. in McCandless Hall. Some of the questions she will address are why Latino immigrants are coming to the Southeast and what impact they are having on the economy and culture.
