Ex-air marshal gets 25 years for plotting to kill ex-wife
GUNTERSVILLE (AP) — A judge has sentenced former federal air marshal James Brian Phelps to 25 years in prison for plotting to kill his ex-wife and her boyfriend. The two were not injured.
Marshall County Assistant District Attorney Byron Waldrop said Circuit Judge Tim Riley sentenced Phelps of Arab to two 25-year sentences to run concurrently.
Phelps was convicted Aug. 24 of two counts of solicitation to commit murder after a weeklong trial in Guntersville. He was arrested about two years ago.
At sentencing, Waldrop said Phelps’ ex-wife, Jamie Phelps, made an unusual request. She urged the judge to grant her ex-husband probation.
