Mobile officer shoots, kills man during struggle

MOBILE (AP) — A Mobile police officer shot and killed a 45-year-old man during a struggle, police said.

The officer, whose name was not released, stopped Gregory Seales as he was riding a bicycle about 11 p.m. Friday off Dauphin Island Parkway in south Mobile, police spokesman Officer Eric Gallichant said.

Seales fled, and the officer chased him through some backyards and into woods, Gallichant said.

During the pursuit, the officer and Seales got into a struggle in a ditch, Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Jr. said Saturday.

The officer tried unsuccessfully to use his Taser on Seales, Tyson said, and at one point Seales struck the officer with a stick. The officer fired his gun during the struggle, hitting Seales in the left side.

Seales died at the scene.
