North Park continues to develop

Each year Morgan County North Park at Priceville takes up more space.

The sprawling will continue until the park is fully developed.

When District 1 Commissioner Jeff Clark started building the park more than three years ago, he had growth in mind. He opened the park with five baseball/softball fields and a soccer field. The work continues.

“We’re putting in walking trails right now,” Clark said. “We increase our development a little bit every year. We hope to get the football field ready for next year. It could also double as a full-size soccer field or be split into several small fields.”

He said the Priceville Community Recreation Association uses the baseball/softball fields almost nightly in season. Landscape accents include the Dai-kin Garden that’s filling with a variety of Japanese plants.

“We’ve almost got the garden finished,” said Clark. “We also have two pavilions done, and I’m going to check and see if we can do the bathrooms for them soon.”

Daikin America Inc. gave $50,000 for the garden. A playground is also complete. Another main attraction is a state-of-the-art concession stand.

“We’ve got the only concession stand with an indoor dining area,” Clark said. “They serve hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, corndogs and other things.”

With the park growing, Clark said he needs a second employee there. The commission approved another position during a meeting last week.

“It’s gotten to the point where we needed extra help, so we’re going to try to run it with two people and see how it works.”

Clark expects to finish the walking trails, restrooms and two multi-purpose fields that are “roughed in” in the next three years. “We have to compromise with our funding, because the roads come first.
