Benefit blood drive at Athens church
ATHENS — A local church is holding a blood drive Wednesday for a man who must undergo a blood transfusion every two weeks.
The benefit blood drive will be for Hubert Ruf, the husband of Hazel Ruf.
The drive will be at Athens Church of God at West Hobbs Street and Lucas Ferry Road from 2-7 p.m.
Emergency training sessions to start
Training sessions will start Monday for citizens who want to be ready to help others in emergencies.
Community Emergency Response Training sessions will continue weekly through Dec. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Turner-Surles Community Center, 702 Sycamore St. N.W.
The training includes how to manage utilities, put out small fires, provide basic medical aid, search, rescue, organize the scene, and collect information for first responders. Participants will learn to deal with three medical killers by opening airways, controlling bleeding and treating for shock.
The Volunteer Center of Morgan County and Morgan County Emergency Management Agency are offering the training.

Discount flu shots at Decatur General
Decatur General Hospital will offer discount flu shots for $20 at two vaccination clinics.
The first will be Oct. 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Camp Bluebird Room on Decatur General’s main campus. The other will be Nov. 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Decatur General Rehab Access on Danville Road Southwest.
Recipients must be at least 18 years old and should make an appointment by calling 341-2111.
Oct. 23 is Decatur’s ‘Parenting Day’
Decatur City Schools will hold “Parenting Day” on Oct. 23. Parents need to contact their child’s school and set up a time for a parent-teacher conference between 1 and 7 p.m.
“Parenting Day” is part of a statewide emphasis on parental involvement in schools during October.
