AREA NEWS IN BRIEF

Thieves make off with paintball guns

ATHENS — Thieves in Athens have armed themselves with paintball guns.

Thieves broke into two paintball businesses this month and stole the guns and other items.

The Limestone County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the theft at Park Paintball on Newby Road.

Someone took a cash register with coins and paintball guns between Oct. 8 and Friday. Monday afternoon, the owner still was totaling the amount stolen.

The Athens Police Department is investigating a theft at Phoenix Paintball on U.S. 72, where someone took $8,490 in items Friday or Saturday.

Items taken include nine paintball guns, masks, tanks, a loader and barrels.

There also was $300 damage to a window.

“It’s a good possibility both incidents are related,” said Sheriff’s Department Chief Investigator Stanley McNatt.

Man faces charges in trailer theft

MOULTON — A man faces charges of having a stolen utility trailer and welding equipment taken during a theft in the Speake Community, Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Mitchell said Monday.

Brandon Scott Keenum, 25, of 1331 Main St., Apartment No. 2, came under suspicion after Moulton police found the stolen property inside the city limits, Mitchell said.

Lawrence County sheriff’s investigators arrested Keenum on Monday on a charge of first-degree receiving stolen property. He remained in Lawrence County Jail on a probation hold.

Mitchell said the investigation continues and additional arrests may be forthcoming.
