Local bands dominate marching contest

Marching bands from Austin, Decatur and Hatton high schools won top awards Saturday at the 16th annual Mud Creek Marching Contest at Hanceville High School.

Hatton won the award for highest composite score in the division for smaller bands, as well as the Tam Easterwood Award for the color guard with the highest score in all divisions. Hatton won best in Class 2A for color guard, percussion and band.

Austin had the highest composite score for larger bands, as well as best in Class 4A for
color guard and percussion. Athens High School’s majorettes won best in Class 4A.

Decatur won the best in Class 3A for band, color guard and drum major Lucas Deffenbaugh. Hartselle High School won the Class 3A award for percussion, while East Lawrence High School had the best 3A majorettes.

Thirty bands from across North and Central Alabama marched in the Hanceville competition.
