Woman allegedly goes on car rampage

By Seth Burkett 340-2355

HARTSELLE — A woman who crashed her car into a garage and an aboveground swimming pool during a rampage faces criminal charges, Morgan County sheriff's investigators said.

Investigators said a search for her husband led an angered Laura D. Gray, 50, of Falkville to wreak havoc at the home in the 900 block of New Center Road at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Gray's husband was apparently staying with the couple who live there because he and Gray are separated, but he was not at the residence when the incident took place, investigators said.

Investigator Pete Taylor said Gray drove her car into the garage and damaged two motorcycles, one of which belonged to her husband. She then backed out and struck two vans and a lawnmower.

The man who lived there was in the garage at the time, but he was far enough away to avoid injury, Taylor said.

Gray then crashed her car head-on into the aboveground pool and left it there, Taylor said.

"After she did that, she went to the door of the residence and attempted to break the door down with a patio chair," Taylor said. "She also made some threats to the lady inside. The woman's husband came and grabbed her. ... When he saw her trying to break the rear glass door, he stopped her from doing any more damage, and set her down while his wife called authorities."

A report filed by the couple listed an initial estimate of $6,900 in damage.

Deputies arrested Gray and charged her with first-degree criminal mischief and third-degree burglary. She remained in Morgan County Jail on Monday in lieu of $1,500 bond.
