Plans for roundabout dropped in favor of four-way stop idea

ATHENS — A roundabout no longer is the plan for the Lindsay Lane and Nick Davis Road/ Forrest Street intersection.

Public Works Director James Rich told the Athens Planning Commission on Tuesday that the plan to handle increased traffic in that area is a four-way stop with center turn lanes. That means up to eight vehicles could be stopped at the intersection.

Some commissioners asked whether motorists would be able to safely operate a four-way stop with turn lanes. Rich said such stops are in use in Enterprise and Birmingham. A traffic consultant will work with the city on the layout.

Rich said construction should start in six weeks and take two months to complete. The intersection will be closed during part of the construction.
