Child suspended for taking handgun to Midfield school

MIDFIELD (AP) — A 6-year-old Midfield Elementary School student has been suspended for bringing a loaded handgun to school.

Police Chief Ron White said the .40-caliber pistol was taken from the child without incident Wednesday.

The boy had shown the gun to a classmate, who alerted a teacher. The gun was found in his backpack.

School Superintendent Douglas Ragland said the student was suspended pending a hearing.

"We got a call from the school about 10 o'clock that they had found a 6-year-old student in possession of a handgun," he said.

"Last night (Tuesday) an adult male relative visited the house and had it on his person," White said. "It was a legal gun. At some point he mislaid it or lost track of it and left the house without it. The student found it and thought it would be cool to take it to school."
