Athens man collapses in Limestone jail, dies

ATHENS — An Athens man died Saturday after collapsing in the Limestone County Jail.

Larry King, 57, stood up from a chair and fell about 11 a.m., according to Sheriff Mike Blakely.

Lt. Allen Craig, who had seen him fall, found that he was not breathing. Craig performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and King started breathing again, but breathing stopped after an ambulance arrived. Despite further CPR, King died en route to Athens-Limestone Hospital.

Blakely said it was apparently a heart attack, but an autopsy will be performed because King was an inmate, serving time for driving under the influence.

King had heart problems and had been taken to a doctor earlier in the week, the sheriff said.
