2 killed in separate shootings in Birmingham, Bessemer

BIRMINGHAM (AP) — Two men died in separate shootings in Birmingham and Bessemer.

Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Johnny Long said Jermaine Johnson, 33, of Birmingham was killed in the Central Park area at 7:50 p.m. Friday.

He was taken to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:26 p.m.

It was the city’s 70th homicide this year.

Further details were not immediately available from Birmingham police.

Bessemer shooting

Long said Melvin Johnson, 23, of Bessemer, was shot to death on Dartmouth Avenue in Bessemer around 6 p.m. Friday.

Sgt. Hank Edwards, spokesman for the Bessemer Police Department, said two other victims were taken to area hospitals.

One was in critical condition Friday night, he said, while the other’s injury was not thought to be life-threatening.

Bessemer police said a man was later arrested, but no further details were available Saturday morning.
