Red Cross campaign raises $42,000
The Morgan-Lawrence County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a new vehicle to support disaster victims and rescue workers.
The organization has received about $42,000 from its third annual Major Gifts fundraiser, allowing it to buy a Point of Distribution vehicle. The POD van will be stocked with food, water, blankets and other items to support local disaster relief efforts.
The train/propane truck collision last February is an example of where the POD van will go, said Debbie Heard, Red Cross director.
The $37,000 vehicle also can be used to shuttle mass amounts of food to disaster relief shelters, she added.
Eighty-five percent of the contributions to the fundraiser were $1,000 or more. The amount, which continues to grow, is about $7,000 more than last year.
