Monday, the Morgan County Board of Education:

  • Recognized school board member Tom Earwood for his service on the board.

  • Approved field trip for Falkville High School for about 10 seniors and their chaperones to travel Nov. 29-Dec. 2 to Busch Gardens in Tampa, Fla., to attend math and physics day.

  • Approved field trip for Priceville Elementary School for about 92 third-graders and chaperones to Chattanooga on May 8 to visit Rock City, Tennessee Aquarium and Creative Discovery Museum.

  • Approved a field trip for West Morgan Middle School for about 10 to 15 eighth-graders and chaperones to travel Jan. 25-30 to Keystone School of Science, Keystone, Colo., to enhance environmental issues using critical thinking and problem solving strategies.

  • Approved a field trip for West Morgan High School for about 80 sixth-graders to travel March 2-7 to Washington, D.C., to conduct educational tours of historical sites.

  • Approved a field trip for West Morgan High School for about 50 seniors to travel to Atlanta on Nov. 2 to attend the Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament to observe a medieval times demonstration.

  • Approved job descriptions in the policy code for a job coach and ACCESS facilitator.

  • Approved policy code changes for the school district organization, school administration and school district operations.

  • Awarded a contract to buy carpet from Morgan City Carpets for $15.84 per square yard.

  • Awarded a contract to buy floor tile from O.F. Richter for $1.25 per square yard.

  • Awarded a contract to buy paint from Sherwin Williams.

  • Awarded a contract to buy propane from Country Gas of Morgan County for $1.4805 per gallon.

  • Approved purchase of a driver education car from the state bid list for $15,838.85.

  • Approved purchase a van and a truck from Long Lewis Ford for $35,199.00 off of the state bid list.


    ? Approved a special education services contract for hospital/homebound services with Saundra Cobb and Holly Miller.

  • Approved a special education services contract with Helki Crowder, Kristyn Turney and Tricia Gleason.

  • Transferred Kenny Allen, bus driver, Brewer High School, to bus driver, countywide, placed at Lacey’s Spring School; and Nelda Coker, from driver education teacher, Brewer, to driver education teacher, Priceville High School.

  • Accepted the resignations of Matthew Lamtham, math teacher, football coach and golf coach, Brewer High School; Alesha Hutto, middle school volleyball coach, West Morgan Middle School; and Konnye Morgan, third-grade teacher, Danville-Neel Elementary.

  • Accepted $6,000 grant from the Alabama Council on the Arts for Cotaco School’s art program. The money will be used to hire Myra Bazzel for six days per month for the remainder of the 2007-08 school year.

  • Approved leave of absence without pay for William Boyer, custodian, Brewer; Vaunda Phillips, office aide, Priceville High School; Jeanette Hoskins, bus driver, Priceville Elementary School; Reta Boutwell, child nutrition program
    worker, West Morgan High School.

  • Rescinded previous board action naming Bruce Fitzgerald as junior varsity volleyball coach, Danville High School, effective with the beginning of the 2007-08 school year. Holly Little will fill the position.

  • Hired Karen Wilemon as B-team volleyball coach, Falkville High School; Thomas Brit Randolph, ninth-grade boys basketball coach, Falkville High; John Berry, bus driver, countywide, placed at Priceville Elementary School; April Harris, part-time Child Nutrition Program worker, Ryan School.

  • Accepted the resignation of Dana Sides, annual staff sponsor, Sparkman School; Reta Boutwell, CNP worker, West Morgan High School.

  • Approved the application for continued salary in lieu of sick leave on Betty Watson, part-time CNP worker, West Morgan Elementary School, for a total of 31 days.

  • Transferred Robin Roy, bus driver, Sparkman School, to bus driver, countywide, placed at West Morgan High School.

  • Approved a contract with Kierston Brooks Jones, family resource liaison aide.

  • Transferred Julie Thrasher, from math teacher at Brewer to drop-out prevention advisor, central office Morgan County Schools on contract period for a temporary 10-month position contingent on renewal of a state grant.

  • Hired Karol Legg, Meeting the Needs of Our Maternity Students instruction aide. This is a temporary nine-month
    position contingent upon renewal of a state grant through the Alabama State Department of Education. She will continue working as a bus driver for the Morgan County School Learning Center.
