Walk Your Paws in Decatur

Sadie, a 17-year-old spaniel mix, is ready in her princess outfit for this year's Walk Your Paws costume contest. That contest, along with a pet/owner look-a-like contest, are part of the activities dogs and their masters can join during Saturday's fundraiser for Animal Friends Humane Society.

Sadie, a blind dog owned by volunteer coordinator Myra Cook, is an example of a pet AFHS rescued.

"I would never buy from a breeder," she said. "The world is full of unwanted animals, and why bring more into this world when we can bring these others home?"

Cook has four dogs and five cats that were all rescued. "My animals are my therapy, and when they're all around me, all is well with the world."

Cook has worked with the Humane Society and Decatur Animal Shelter for eight years. You can also adopt pets at the event, which is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wilson Morgan Park. For more information, call 351-2347.
