Joppa man killed in crash

HULACO — A crash with a tractor-trailer killed a Joppa man Wednesday morning.

State troopers said the car, driven by Algie Dever Humphries, 80, collided with the tractor-trailer on Alabama 67 about one-fourth mile north of Arab at 9 a.m.

Morgan County Coroner Russ Beard said Humphries' car appeared to have been headed west on Hulaco Road when it crossed Alabama 67 and the path of the southbound rig.

"He lived off Hulaco Road and was apparently going home, and he pulled out in front of an 18-wheeler," Beard said.

Beard pronounced Hum-phries dead at the scene.

"He was wearing a seat belt but it didn't matter," Beard said. "He was hit on the driver side, and he died of blunt-force injuries."

The truck driver, Jerry Peyton Hughes, 48, of Arab, suffered no injuries, state troopers said.

Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel Funeral Home will announce arrangements for Humphries.

Beard said Humphries is survived by his wife.

"It was a tragic accident," Beard said. "I feel for the family."
