Accused shoplifter assaulted store customer, police say

A shoplifter attacked a store customer who caught him stealing bras and pajamas, Decatur police said Thursday.

The customer and T.J. Maxx employees restrained Michael O'Neil Lewis, 26, long enough for police to arrive and take him into custody, said Capt. Vince Baer, a police spokesman.

Investigators charged Lewis with third-degree robbery following the 5:30 p.m. incident Wednesday at the 1682-C Beltline Road S.W. retailer.

A police report listed five stolen bras, five pajama shirts and a pair of pajama pants as recovered.

Baer said a customer, 28-year-old Demetrius Hightower, saw Lewis stealing the undergarments.

"The customer alerted management. Lewis struck the customer in the face and a fight ensued," Baer said.

Morgan County Jail released Lewis on Wednesday on $750 bond. Lewis' jail booking record listed his address as 2222 Acadia Drive S.W., Apartment 100.
