Target No. 1 in new-store sales

By Eric Fleischauer

Of the 61 Target stores to open in October, the one in Decatur had the highest sales.

"We did extremely well," said store manager John Randolph. "I can't use numbers, but we couldn't be more pleased."

Target, which anchors The Crossings of Decatur at U.S. 31 and U.S. 67, celebrated its grand opening Oct. 14.

The 125,000-square-foot store does not sell produce or fresh meat, but that did not hurt sales.

"My highest department is the one that everyone was concerned with, and it's groceries," Randolph said.

The second highest sales were in ladies apparel.

Randolph applauded the local work force that he tapped to staff the store.

"They're some of the best team members that I have supervised in my 14 years," Randolph said.

Business, record-setting at opening, has remained good.

"Our weekend business is the strongest, but every day is still really strong," Randolph said. "We're getting great noon-time traffic. People will come and shop at lunch and then go back to work. Definitely the 5 p.m. traffic is great."
