Four individuals and two groups took top honors at the 24th annual Volunteer of the Year “Heart of the Community” awards.

The individual youth award went to Rosalind Boonarkat, who serves Alacare Home Health and Hospice. Charles Reid received the individual adult award for service to Morgan/Lawrence Chapter of American Red Cross.

Lifetime achievement awards went to Dennis Roberson for service to Morgan County Rescue Squad and Estelle Smith for service to American Legion Auxiliary.

The Rock Creek Homemakers Club was the adult group winner, while United Launch Alliance’s Decatur Employee Volunteer Association received the Partner in Community award.

Overall, 22 people and groups were nominated for awards this year.

The winners received a plaque and a $500 donation for the organization where they volunteer from state Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur.

In addition to the awards, Ray Norris, a volunteer for the Community Free Clinic, and Holly Starr, a representative of Hartselle High School Key Club, received Daily Points of Light Award certificates issued by the National Points of Light Foundation and Hands On Network.

Daily Points of Light Awards recognize an exemplary volunteer each weekday of the year.

Norris was chosen for July 31. The Hartselle High School Key Club was chosen for Oct. 9.
