Athens City Council

ATHENS — The Athens City Council on Monday:

  • Approved an agreement with the state Department of Transportation to allow workers to barricade access during construction of the Interstate 65 interchange at Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road and to maintain crossroads, service drives or relocated roads that are not state or federal roads.

  • Approved Randy’s Trackside Beverage and Convenience Store, formerly H&H Barbecue, at 23021 Nick Davis Road for alcohol sales.

  • Changed the blasting ordinance to give the fire chief permitting authority instead of the council.

  • Designated Nov. 23 a city holiday because it falls after Thanksgiving.

  • Approved travel expenses
    of $3,679 for Water/Wastewater Department Manager John Stockton for conferences in
    Mississippi and San Diego; and $56 for Jonathan Bedsole to
    attend an Alabama Depart-
    ment of Environmental Management meeting in Montgomery.

  • Declared property north and south of Brownsferry Street a public nuisance. Will have a public hearing Dec. 10 at 5 p.m.

  • Added positions for a third municipal court clerk, grade 7, and fire inspector, grade 10.

  • Approved traffic circulation standards.
