Officer shoots inmate during escape attempt

MONTGOMERY (AP) — An inmate was shot and injured when he tried to escape from custody, the Alabama Department of Corrections said Wednesday.

Barry Lynn Reddick, 51, who is serving a life sentence at the medium-security Staton Correctional Facility, was attending classes on the campus of J.F. Ingram State Technical College when the attempt occurred Wednesday morning.

He was airlifted to Baptist Medical Center South, and was reported to be awake, alert, and in stable condition.

Reddick and other inmates were being escorted to the dining hall at the adjacent Frank Lee Correctional Facility for lunch when he tried to escape by running into some nearby woods.

Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett said Reddick was shot by an officer who was assisting with moving the inmates. He said deadly force is authorized to prevent the escape of medium and high security inmates.

Reddick, who was sentenced in July 2003 for attempted rape, was shot as he was running away, Corbett said.
