Police say employees stole missing deposit

ATHENS — A $15,000 bank deposit that has been missing for more than a year was actually stolen by two employees, police said.

Athens Capt. Marty Bruce said Sondra Kaye Roberts, 37, of 17219 Dusty Road, Athens, and Stacy Ray Bright, 34, of 27702 Pepper Road, Athens, were working for Advance America when the deposit was lost.

Investigator Dustin Lansford said the women allegedly claimed the bank was closed when they tried to deposit the money, and it was lost or stolen when they made another stop.

The duo said the amount was less than $15,000, Lansford said.

In the past 11/2 years, Roberts and Bright have made fraudulent transactions to cover for the missing deposit, Bruce said.

Police charged them with first-degree theft of property. They are out of the Limestone County Jail on $5,000 bond each.
