Red Cross offers way to honor soldiers

By Paul Huggins · 340-2395

Residents can pay tribute to soldiers and help ensure they receive emergency communications from their families with a new campaign by the Morgan-Lawrence County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The campaign will take donations in honor or memory of soldiers or veterans.

The Decatur Daily will publish the names of each honoree as well as the donor in early December.

The deadline to donate is Nov. 30.

Donors can choose the amount they want to give. Corporations and organization are encouraged to honor an entire military company, unit or battalion.

The Red Cross provides the only communications link between U.S. service personnel and their families 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.

Emergency communication is an overlooked Red Cross service compared to disaster relief, said Debbie Heard, Red Cross chapter director.

Raising awareness

Red Cross officials hope the campaign raises awareness that the organization provides other vital services daily even when disasters die down.

“Not everybody is united in their opinion about the war, but everyone is united in that we want to support the soldiers,” she said.

“You think about your family member being that far from home fighting and some type of crisis happens, you want to make sure that information gets to them,” Heard said. “And the Red Cross responds within two hours.”
