MEETING NOTES
Decatur City Board of Education

On Tuesday, the Decatur City Board of Education:

  • Heard a report from Finance Director Melanie Maples that the school system finished the 2007 fiscal year with $13.2 million in reserves, equal to two months in operating expenses. The Child Nutrition Program finished the fiscal year with $1.9 million in reserves.

  • Heard a report from Maples that the school system had $5.9 million in revenues and $6.4 million in expenditures in October, leaving $12.7 million in reserves. The CNP had $726,867 in revenues and $608,607 in expenditures, leaving $1.9 million in reserves.

  • Approved change orders on duct detectors, volt breakers and repairs to a damaged conduit serving lighting circuits poured into the roof slab as part of the Austinville Elementary School air conditioning renovation project.

  • Approved a new staff rights and responsibilities policy.

  • Approved a resolution thanking school board member Dwight Jett Jr. for his service in the Iraq War. Certified personnel

  • Accepted the resignation of Stephanie Graham Bass, math teacher, Brookhaven Middle School.

  • Hired Corey M. Jennings, science teacher, Decatur High.

  • Approved leave of absence for Anne Bickley Stephenson, Decatur High; and Rachael A. Clay, military leave, Somerville Road Elementary School. Non-certified personnel

  • Hired Maria Sanchez, custodian, Somerville Road Elementary; Jessica A. Parker, CNP worker, Brookhaven; and Cristi Wilks Hyatt, special education aide, Somerville Road.

  • Approved leaves of absence for Paula Diane Harwell, Frances Nungester Elementary School; Traci Elizabeth Bolan, Julian Harris Elementary School; Kennetha A. Watson, Oak Park Middle School; Angela Hughes Davis, Somerville Road; and Tanya Nicole Reid, Walter Jackson Elementary School.

  • Transferred Allyson L. Teague from clerical aide to supervisor’s secretary, central office; Jennifer D. King from CNP worker at Decatur High to systemwide CNP worker; and Maria Del Barboza from CNP worker at Oak Park to CNP worker at Decatur High.
