Head-on collision leaves woman dead

A head-on collision killed a woman and injured a man Saturday night on U.S. 72 in Limestone County near the Madison County line.

The man was taken by helicopter to Huntsville Hospital. The driver of one vehicle was walking and talking with state troopers.

A man said he was on his porch when he heard an “explosion.” He said it appeared that an eastbound vehicle was hit from behind, propelling it across to the westbound lanes of the four-lane highway. The collision occurred on the westbound side.

The site is about five miles east of Athens and a mile east of East Limestone Road. Both cars were silver sedans — one a Suzuki with a Limestone County tag, the other a Mercedes with a personalized tag. No identifications were available.
