Montgomery ball field named after shooting victim

MONTGOMERY (AP) — A baseball field in Montgomery has been named for a 3-year-old boy killed by a stray bullet.

Sequoyah Jackson was shot Aug. 5, while playing outside his home. A suspect in the shooting, 21-year-old Sean Howard, has been arrested and charged with capital murder.

On Friday, the Billy Thames Boys & Girls Club in Regency Park dedicated its newest baseball field to the 3-year-old.

His father, Ronnie Jackson, threw the official first pitch Friday.

“He was my little soldier,” Jackson said.

“He was so special. He was so different,” said Sequoyah’s mother, Marie Glover. “Everybody thought so. If they weren’t kissing him, they were tickling him.”

Glover said her son liked to play baseball and football.

Glover said having the field named after her son helped her find peace about his death because she knows the new field will be a safe place for other children to play.

His name will be posted on a sign.

“We will do all we can to make this a safe place,” said Claude Douglas, President of the Boys & Girls Club of South Central Alabama.

As children flew balloons high above the field, the messages written on them spoke to Sequoyah’s family.
