State chamber award fitting for Seymour

When John Seymour became president of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce in 1991, he didn't come with a grand scheme to impose on local residents.

His message was simple:

You decide what you want to do and we will do it.

And he's kept his word during the 14 years he's led the business-oriented organization that now goes by Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce.

His peers in the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama recently honored his more than 25 years of work here and in Mississippi and with the national Jaycees. They presented him the Jamie Wallace Award as the state chamber professional of the year.

At each stop in his career, Mr. Seymour helped organizations and communities focus on their goals and helped them work toward them.

The local chamber is active and intensively involved in the community, in part, because Mr. Seymour inspired civic leaders and made them willing to invest millions of private dollars, and enormous amounts of time, to set and reach new goals.

The award is richly deserved.
