School program needs some more partners

Decatur and Morgan County schools' Partner in Education program is a win-win-win situation for schools, students and local businesses.

A business or industry participating in the Partner in Education program adopts a specific school to help meet its needs — providing field trips, guest readers, playground equipment and financial support, for example.

A liaison from the partnering business meets with officials from the school to determine how it can best help. This assures that the resources provided are used to meet actual needs.

For a minimal investment of time and money, the partner business receives tax breaks and valuable public relations exposure. The schools tap into resources that would not otherwise be available. Students receive equipment and often learn lessons that textbooks do not teach.

The Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce honored participating Partner in Education businesses at a breakfast Tuesday.

While all of the Decatur system's 19 schools have partners, only about half of the county schools have been adopted. The chamber is trying to get every school a partner.

To all of the businesses that participate in the Partner in Education program, thank you.

To those that don't, won't you consider it?
