Daikin's generous offer was deeply appreciated

In their polite culture, Japanese view rejection of a gift as an insult to the giver. Our mayor surely didn't intend anything of the kind in rejecting Daikin America's $150,000 gift for a fishing pier.

Daikin is one of the city's most valued industries and one of its best corporate citizens.

Mayor Don Kyle can speak for himself, of course, but on behalf of the many city residents who think highly of Daikin, we apologize.

Daikin made the gift in the belief that our goal is to make the Tennessee River more accessible to average people.

Whether the rejection was for safety or political purposes, the gift was a nice gesture for which we say, "Thanks."
