Catch the Spirit festival at Point Mallard this weekend

Tennessee Valley residents are fortunate that they need not travel far to enjoy one of the South's largest Fourth of July celebrations.

The Spirit of America Festival at Point Mallard Park offers wholesome family entertainment, including contests and pageants, food and rides, local and nationally-known music acts and, of course, a huge fireworks display as the festival comes to a close Monday night.

Truly a patriotic event, the Spirit festival also recognizes genuine American heroes.

The Audie Murphy Award honors individuals who have shown exemplary patriotism in the spirit of the most decorated soldier of World War II. This year's recipient is National Guard Spc. Michael Acquaviva of Joppa, representing all Alabamians who have served in the war on terror.

The Barrett C. Shelton Freedom Award recognizes outstanding service to the community and state. This year's recipient is Decatur attorney John Caddell.

With seed-spitting contests and sack races, a children's parade and beauty and talent contests, the Spirit festival has something for every member of the family.

Enjoy a fun, safe Independence Day weekend.
